Classroom Environment

“The child is truly a miraculous being, and this should be felt deeply by the educator."  - Dr. Montessori

Lakewood Montessori follows the philosophy of Dr. Maria Montessori as closely and traditionally as possible.  The classrooms are lovely, welcoming spaces filled with plants, pets, art, Montessori learning materials, and child sized furniture.  Certified Montessori teachers foster love of learning.   Principles of respect, concentration, self-confidence, and self-direction are also emphasized.

Learning is highly individualized.  Each child learns at his own pace under the guidance of the teacher.  Multi-aged classes provide a non-competitive environment in which the children assist one another in lessons or are free to work independently.

Art

Taught by Elizabeth Scoggin, who has been teaching art to young children for many years. Elizabeth has a design background and a love for art.  She teaches art principles along art history.  She uses many mediums, including clay and watercolor.

She believes that as children become comfortable with manipulating the materials, they will be able to express themselves using the creative process. Look for projects to be displayed in the entry hall, and an art show at the end of the school year.

Music

Trisha Kempton has been teaching music to children for 7 years. She is a licensed Kindermusik instructor. She believes that music is an essential part of all of our lives, and can be used to teach many things. The primary goal for Lakewood Montessori’s music program is total growth for the developing child.

Music and movement foster growth in all areas of development, physical, emotional, social. Trisha has a large collection of instruments and props like dancing scarves and parachutes to make learning about music and movement lots of fun.

French

Taught by Jessica Bigoney. Jessica has a degree in French Foreign Language and spent time in Thailand teaching English to preschool and grade school children. She believes that above all, learning should be fun.  Jessica feels that when a lesson is interesting and interactive the learning happens naturally. Her lessons are full of games, music, dress-up, mimicking and social interaction.  Throughout the course of the school year she focuses on simple conversation and vocabulary for objects children use and see everyday.  She also introduces culture, tradition and geography.

Children are naturally wired to absorb and learn language. For this reason, Lakewood Montessori is dedicated to exposing children to foreign language at such a young age; giving them a foundation for continuing foreign language education in the future. Reinforcement of a new language is key to retaining it.  The lessons learned in class will build on themselves as the school year progresses.  Jessica will also periodically send home vocabulary words so that learning will not have to stop at the classroom
